JUPITER — Scripps Research Institute scientists think that they are absorbed in something big.
Some of the latest research done on the Scripps Jupiter campus could lead to safe and effective coronavirus vaccines, the researchers say.

The findings are still preliminary and have not been published, but one member of the research team is expected to provide public updates on the project.
Scripps officials were unavailable to discuss their findings Tuesday. However, Professor Michael Farzan, Co-Chair of Scripps’ Immunology and Microbiology Division and one of the scientists working on various coronavirus-related projects in Scripps, Florida, said during a Wednesday web lecture. In their study, experts in collaboration with other Scripps scientists in Farzan, elsewhere in the United States and China, simulated the characteristics of coronavirus in rats.
They injected four rodents with a dose containing the amino acids found in the spikes found in the now ubiquitous image of coronavirus.
Researchers write that a collection of amino acids called the receptor-binding domain (RBD) has been shown to help induce “robust” production of neutralizing antibodies.
Antibodies are part of the immune response that helps the body recover from COVID-19 and other diseases. Their presence, which many scientists expect, suggests that a person has immunity from the coronavirus-at least against that wave of infection.
“These data suggest that RBD-based vaccines against (coronavirus) may be safe and effective,” the researchers wrote in a draft summary. Preliminary findings were posted on the Cold Spring Harbor Labs website on the unpublished Life Sciences Preprint on April 12th.
Researchers write that RBD-based vaccines also appear to carry a small threat of certain side effects found in Zika and Dengue vaccines that can actually facilitate how the virus enters cells.
