COVID-19 surges dangerously in Brazil, WHO Americas branch warns

Brasilia (Reuters)-Coronavirus is “dangerously” proliferating across Brazil. Carissa Etienne, director of the Americas Regional Bureau of the World Health Organization (WHO), warned on Tuesday calling on all Brazilians to take precautions to stop the spread.

“Unfortunately, the dire situation in Brazil is also affecting neighboring countries,” Etienne, director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), said in a briefing.

She said cases of COVID-19 are increasing in Venezuela’s Bolivian and Amazonas states, and in the border region between Peru and Bolivia.

According to experts, the first virus variant found in Brazil, known as P1, is more contagious than the original coronavirus strain and is currently detected in 15 countries in the Americas, a major concern. Said Sylvain Aldighieri, Incident Manager at PAHO.

According to PAHO, in Southern Corn, cases of COVID-19 continue to surge in Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.

In Paraguay, most of the beds in the intensive care unit (ICU) are occupied and the healthcare system is buckling under pressure. Uruguay has reported more than 1,000 cases per day several times in the past few weeks, a surprising number given the size of the country.

In Central America, the number of cases in Panama is declining, but the increase in hospitalizations in Guatemala is putting pressure on the number of ICU beds.

The COVAX facility, led by the WHO and Gavi coalition to provide equitable access to vaccines, has provided 2,161,800 doses to the region so far, including more than one million doses to Brazil last weekend. did.

PAHO expects more than 100,000 vaccines to be delivered to El Salvador, Belize and Suriname this week, with 1.2 million boosters already procured.

“Vaccines are coming, but for most people in our area it’s still a few months away,” Etienne said.

Latin America and the Caribbean have recorded approximately 23.7 million cases of coronavirus and 746,000 associated deaths, according to Reuters data, among Asian and African casualties combined. It’s almost double.

In Brazil alone, there are more than 295,000 deaths from COVID-19 and more than 12 million cases of the virus.
