LSU Health New Orleans Enrolls First Patient in COVID-19 Treatment Trial | Crescent City Community News

LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine enrolled its first patient in a randomized clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of hydroxychloroquine alone and in combination as a treatment for COVID-19.

According to the news, Dr. Melede demento, assistant professor of the Infectious Diseases section of the LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine and lead investigator of the trial, released.

Consent patients admitted to the University Medical Center, one of LSU Health New Orleans’s teaching hospitals, will be enrolled in one of three departments in the study: treatment with hydroxychloroquine alone, treatment with hydroxychloroquine + azithromycin, Or current standard supportive care.

There are currently no approved treatments for COVID-19. Neither hydroxychloroquine nor azithromycin is FDA approved for the treatment of COVID-19 in the United States.
