Medical director warns that coronavirus regulation will last for one year

Britain’s chief medical officer said the UK would have to take some form of destructive social action for at least the rest of the year.

Professor Chris Whitty told reporters at the daily Downing Street Press Briefing that some measures need to be taken until a vaccine or drug that reduces the severity of Covid 19 appears.

He did not specify exactly what kind of measures would be needed, but it is known that ministers are considering the need to maintain elements of social distance.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has announced plans for “large” contact tracking as a way to bring the virus under control once the current lockdown is mitigated.

Professor Witty said: “In the long run, the exit from this will ideally be one of two.

Whitty said that person-to-person transmission of coronavirus (known as the R-value) must be kept below 1 to mitigate lockdown protection.

He said: “We cannot allow the transmission power R to exceed 1 for any further period at any time.

“It doesn’t take long to go from bad numbers to really bad ones.

“This disease is never eradicated and will not go away, so we need to accept that we are addressing the diseases that accompany it globally for a foreseeable future.

“If people expect us to suddenly move from where we are locked down to where everything disappears suddenly, we have to be very realistic. It’s completely unrealistic. It’s an expectation.

Foreign minister Dominic Raab, acting on behalf of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who recovers from Covid 19, told reporters that lower communication speeds mean more options to ease the blockade.

Hancock said in a Commons Tuesday that he was convinced that the country was at the peak of outbreaks, but stressed that continued social distance is still needed to reduce the number of new cases.

He told lawmakers that many people attended Commons sessions remotely. “We are building our testing and contact tracking capabilities in a few weeks.”
