Vaccine rollout begins April 6th | Local News
The Trinidad and Tobago Covid-19 Vaccination Rollout Program will begin on April 6th.
This will be provided if the delivery of 33,600 vaccines from the COVAX facility arrives on time.
Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said yesterday that the COVAX shipment will arrive Tuesday at 6:10 pm.
Vaccines are currently heading from South Korean AstraZeneca makers to Trinidad and Tobago.
Deyalsingh said shipments must go from South Korea to Brussels, Amsterdam, and Miami before the final journey to Trinidad.
“Many things can happen,” he said to delay arrival, but the current expected delivery date is March 30.
“If everything went according to plan, if all the flights were done on time, if there was no weather delay,” he explained.
Upon arrival of the vaccine, Deyalsingh said it would be stored in two facilities. Half will be stored in C40, Chaguaramas, and the other half will be stored in the newly constructed chiller at Cuba Hospital.
“This is to spread the risk,” he explained.
“If one site goes down, you won’t lose everything. Both sites have backup generators and alarms, but they all. We are very careful.”
Deyalsingh said 3,000 doses will be shipped to Tobago on Thursday and the rest will be distributed to 21 sites in Trinidad for general distribution.
Since the vaccine needs to be given twice, only 16,800 vaccines will be given.
The other half is reserved for the recipient to receive a second shot within 4-6 weeks.
Deyalsingh said the promotion of vaccination will continue and front-line healthcare professionals will be vaccinated first.
Last month, 1,000 healthcare workers were already vaccinated from a batch of 2,000 vaccines from Barbados.
