Amish groups can reach COVID “herd immunity”: health authorities
Local health officials claim that the Amish community in Pennsylvania may have become the first group in the United States to achieve herd immunity.
Administrators of a medical center in the heart of the New Holland Autonomous Region of Lancaster County, known for the Amish and Mennonite communities, estimate that 90% of religious families have infected at least one family with the virus.

However, Hoover said it is impossible to know the full extent of the virus’s outbreak, as it is estimated that less than 10 percent of symptomatic patients agreed to the test.
On average, about 12 infections occur daily in medical centers, and about 15% of patients are infected daily, Hoover said.
The infection has declined throughout the summer, but before recovering again in the fall, Hoover said new cases are now far away and few in the meantime.
According to Hoover, the center had no patients showing symptoms of the virus for about six weeks.
However, some experts are skeptical that the large-scale outbreak has led to widespread immunity in the community.
Eric Lofgren, an infectious disease epidemiologist at Washington State University, said herd immunity was possible but rare.
“It will be the first general population in the United States to do that,” Lofgren said.
Experts suggest that as many as 90% of people need to be infected to achieve herd immunity, but some say the exact threshold is still unknown.
“The important thing is that magic numbers don’t always exist,” said David Daudi, a professor of epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Some experts warned that previous infections may not be sufficient to protect against new variants of the virus.
“The only true herd immunity we can bring as a community is for people to be vaccinated,” said Alice Yoda, Executive Director of Community Health at Penmedicine Lancaster General Health.
