The Hawaii Colorectal Cancer Family Registration Cohort recruited 2,266 participants to donate blood and provide tumor samples to more accurately predict the risk of colorectal and rectal cancer. The information from the samples will be used to guide studies on the risk, treatment and prevention of colorectal cancer of races and ethnic minorities around the world.

Colorectal cancer, a cancer of the colon or rectum, is the third most frequently diagnosed cancer in Hawaii, according to the Hawaii Tumor Registry of the University of Hawaii Cancer Center.

About 717 new cases are diagnosed on the island each year. Researchers at the UH Cancer Center have embarked on a number of initiatives aimed at reducing the incidence and mortality of these amazing colorectal cancers. One of these initiatives is the participation of the UH Cancer Center in international research on colon cancer.

In 1997, the National Cancer Institute established the Colon Cancer Family Register, which consists of six laboratories in the United States, Canada, and Australia. The registry tracks people diagnosed with colorectal cancer and their affected and unaffected families, and learns more about the impact of genetic and lifestyle factors on the risk of colorectal cancer.

Hawaii Colorectal Cancer Cohort

The Hawaii CCFR site at the UH Cancer Center is also known as the Hawaii Colorectal Cancer Family Registration Cohort. HCCFRC researchers and coordinators have recruited more than 600 families in Hawaii, with a total of 2,266 participants providing blood and tumor samples tested for genetic variation. These samples can help predict participants’ risk of colon and rectal cancer more accurately and can be used to find the best way to prevent them.

“Hawaii’s population is unique, so participation of the UH Cancer Center in this international colorectal cancer study is important,” said Randall Holcombe, director of the UH Cancer Center. “Data from the HCCFRC has the ability to support families not only within our own community, but around the world.”

Due to Hawaii’s unique racial and ethnic population, information from the HCCFRC is of particular importance in guiding studies on the treatment and prevention of colorectal cancer risk, racial and ethnic minorities. Since its founding in 1997, the CCFR site in Hawaii has sought to identify people at high risk for colorectal cancer and improve their health.

Recommended screening

At this time, this study does not enroll new participants, but there are some steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. Because the majority of new colorectal cancer cases occur in people over the age of 50, the US Preventive Medicine Committee recommends that people between the ages of 50 and 65 be screened on a regular basis.

People at high risk for colorectal cancer are advised to talk to their doctor about when to start screening, which tests are right for them, and how often they should be tested. Screening is the key to cancer prevention and early detection. People with a strong family history of cancer may also ask their doctor if genetic counseling is wise.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
