20.3% surge in COVID cases in Massachusetts
Massachusetts saw a surge of new coronavirus cases during the week ending Sunday, with 14,863 cases reported, an increase of 20.3%. Last week there were 12,360 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Massachusetts is ranked 6th among the fastest coronavirus spreads per capita, according to a USA TODAY network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data. Last week, the United States added 442,676 reported cases of coronavirus. This is an increase of 16.2% from the previous week. Nationally, 34 states had more cases in the most recent week than in the previous week.
Within Massachusetts, the worst weekly outbreaks per capita occurred in the Barnstable, Hampden, and Bristol counties. Overall, the newest case was added in Middlesex County, with 2,856 cases. Suffolk County, 1,757 cases. And in Essex County, 1,479. Weekly cases increased in 11 counties from the previous week. The worst increase from last week’s pace was in the Suffolk, Hampden and Middlesex counties.

Massachusetts ranks sixth in the state, with at least one vaccination, with 32.7% of its population vaccinated at least partially. The national percentage is 28.2%, as shown by USA TODAY analysis of CDC data.
Massachusetts reported that in the week ending Sunday, it received an additional 451,427 vaccines against 411,077 in the previous week. Overall, Massachusetts reported 3,424,253 doses.
In Massachusetts, 248 people were reported dead from COVID-19 during the week ending Sunday. The week before that, 222 people were reported dead.
In Massachusetts, a total of 629,531 people have been coronavirus-positive and 17,115 have died of the disease since the outbreak of the pandemic, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In the United States, 30,262,377 are positive and 549,335 are dead.
