Henry Ford Revives Tighter Visitor Rules at Hospitals
Henry Ford Health System has strengthened its visitor policy at three Metro Detroit hospitals in response to the increase in COVID-19 cases.
Visitor restrictions were reinstated Monday at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Henry Ford McCorm Hospital in Clinton Township, and Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital. Dr. Adnan Munkala, Chief Clinical Officer, announced at a press conference.
“We believe that this surge can be prevented from getting worse between vaccination and compliance with all safety measures,” Munkala said. “We need to be vigilant and continue to use all the safety measures that have helped us in the past — wearing masks, social distance, avoiding large gatherings, washing our hands. Michigan has seen a 133% increase over the past two weeks, doubling hospitalizations over the same period. At Henry Ford’s hospital, 245 patients have been hospitalized, and another 60 are waiting for admission from the emergency department or for test results on suspicion of COVID-19, Munkala said.

What has changed
- Masks should always be worn by staff, patients and visitors over the age of five. Those who are refused to wear the mask cannot enter.

- Except for short trips to the bathroom and food purchases, all visitors must be with the patient.

- Visits are not recommended for people at high risk of developing serious complications from COVID-19, such as the elderly and those with underlying illness.
- Patients in the hospital * may have one adult visitor within 24 hours from 10 am to 7 pm. A total of two visitors are allowed during the patient’s hospital stay.
- Pediatric patients may be accompanied by one parent / caregiver for hospitalization. One parent / caregiver can visit outpatients and clinics, except for babies under 2 months of age. In that case, two parents / caregivers are allowed.
Outpatient / medical center visitor restrictions
- All patients and visitors entering the Henry Ford facility for outpatient appointments or services are screened for COVID-19 symptoms, including temperature checks. The mask must be worn by persons over the age of 5. If you do not have a mask, we will give you one. All safety precautions must be followed.
- Patients who have an appointment with the Henry Ford Medical Center or Clinic, who are coming to a laboratory or radiology service, or who are being treated in an emergency department are to transport the patient to and around the facility. You can take one person.
- Outpatients may have one visitor needed to support medical or daily activities, including:

- Pediatric patients can be with one parent / caregiver. For babies under 2 months of age, two parents / caregivers can be together.
- For pregnant patients, the spouse / partner can participate in the patient’s prenatal, ultrasound, and NST appointments.
- The driver of a patient undergoing surgery, procedure, or emergency medical care should stay in the designated waiting room and leave the facility as soon as possible.
