Scientists have identified three genes that are associated with an increased risk of developing cervical cancer.

A study published in a journal led by scientists at Imperial College London Lancet Oncology, Study data from more than 150,000 European women.

This study was one of the first to identify genetic variation associated with. Of cervical cancer and cancer.

The research team says the findings pave the way for identifying high-risk women and more closely monitoring their health. Combine with Screening program.

This study was supported by the National Institute of Health Imperial Biomedical Research Center and Wellcome Trust.

Cervical cancer affects about 570,000 women worldwide, with about 3,200 new cases each year in the United Kingdom. The main cause of the disease is human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, which causes cancerous changes in the cells that line the mucosal surface, such as the cervix.

Dr. Saraboden, Principal Investigator of Research in the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London, explained: Few people develop cervical cancer.

“More than 70% of people are infected with HPV for life, but most women resolve the infection and very few develop abnormal precancerous cervical cells. People who develop cervical cancer. Will be even less.

Previous studies have suggested that about 30 percent of the risk of developing cervical cancer is hereditary. This study is the first to confidently identify a genetic mutation that may be associated with an increased risk of cervical cancer.

The study examined the genetic sequence data of more than 150,000 European women in the UK Biobank cohort and associated them with hospital records and cancer registries.

The data show that common mutations in three genes, called PAX8, CLPTM1L, and the HLA region, are associated with an increased risk of developing cervical cancer. The research team is quantifying the increased risk associated with carrying genetic variation in the next phase of the study.

The HLA region encodes a response in the immune system, suggesting that mutations in these genes can impair the body’s ability to fight or eliminate HPV. cell. PAX8 and CLPTM1L are genes that help control the body’s response to early cancerous changes in cells.

The researchers warn that larger studies need to confirm the findings and that the biological effects of each gene mutation on cervical health need to be studied in detail. However, the findings may pave the way for more personalized screening approaches or targeted therapies in the future.

Dr. Bowden explains: “Once genetic testing becomes widespread, examining a patient’s genetic information along with a cervical examination may help identify individuals who require close monitoring and treatment.

“Increased genetic information may lead to new drugs in the future. At this time, if a woman is found to have precancerous cervical abnormalities, the option is” follow-up, “that is, regular examinations. Or a treatment that surgically removes part of the cervix. This may increase the risk of late miscarriage or preterm birth in future pregnancies. However, if we know more about the interaction between genetics and HPV, we may be able to develop new drugs to treat them. HPV vaccination is ongoing in many countries and appears to be effective in reducing the rate of disease. Increasing global access to HPV vaccines should be a major public health priority for preventing HPV-related cancers. ”

Studies show that self-managed cervical screening has life-saving potential
