CU Boulder – CBS Denver among 21 universities studying whether COVID vaccines prevent viral infections

Boulder, Colorado (CBS4) – Thousands of coronadans are vaccinated daily, leaving long-standing questions. Does the vaccine prevent coronavirus infection? New federal funded trial led by COVID-19 Prevention Network Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Seattle specifically investigates that question.

A total of 12,000 students from 21 universities nationwide, including the University of Colorado at Boulder, will participate in the five-month trial.

If people participating in the study test positive for COVID-19, those near them will also be monitored. Researchers plan to track approximately 25,000 close contacts with participants nationwide.

“If an infection occurs, we can study the dynamics of when the infection occurred and how long it has been in the nasal passages,” says De Souza.

This study is scheduled to end this fall or early winter. The findings may influence campus and national decisions.

“Students who have enrolled in the survey so far want to be part of the solution. They want to at least contribute to providing this kind of information,” said De Souza. “Study is an important population, but the results can be translated into other populations.”
