Public health England (PHE) recommends the use of vitamin D supplements during lockdowns because people spend more time indoors and consequently less sun exposure.

Vitamin D is produced by the body in response to direct sunlight on the skin, and it is thought that it may not be produced in sufficient amounts for isolation measures.

Health professionals are now advised to take 10 micrograms of vitamins daily to ensure healthy bones and muscles.

“This is because you may not get enough vitamin D from the sun if you are mostly indoors all day,” PHE said.

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and phosphate, keeping bones, teeth, and muscles healthy.
