France limits sales of nicotine substitutes after coronavirus research

PARIS (Reuters) -Friday France has restricted the sale of nicotine alternatives as a result of a study published this week.
The Ministry of Health said in a decree that it aimed to avoid the shortage of products such as nicotine patches for patients and to prevent the misuse and abuse of substitutes used to combat nicotine addiction.
Under the law, pharmacies are not allowed to sell more than a month’s worth of substitutes until May 11, when France relaxes lockdown measures and reopens school.
The decree also said online sales were suspended.
“A team of French researchers tend to write interesting scientific papers to show that the people who consume nicotine, and thus the smokers, are less than others,” he told a Diet member on Wednesday. .
“But this does not mean that tobacco protects. It kills tobacco.” In France, more than 70,000 people die each year from smoking-related illnesses.
He was referring to a study by researchers at the Hospital Pitiers-Sarpétrières in Paris, which showed smokers were less infected with the virus than others. It also showed that nicotine can prevent the virus from entering the cell.
