Oregon’s severe social distance evaded 70,000 coronavirus infections, new analysis suggests

Limited testing capacity in Oregon and other states has dramatically reduced the number of coronavirus cases nationwide. Health professionals also believe that many infected people do not show symptoms of the disease.
According to the Oregon Department of Health, at least 86 of the known COVID-19 patients in Oregon have died and 520 have been hospitalized.
According to the Institute, the latest model findings that the state has decided not to impose state-wide home stay orders are:
-The cumulative COVID-19 infection in Oregon will have reached about 80,000 on 16 April. This is 71,600 more than the 8,400 infections estimated by the model.
-Oregon hospitalization will reach about 2,000 in April. 16. This is 1,480 more hospitalizations than the 520 identified by state health authorities.
The authors of the study say that despite avoiding a public health catastrophe, Oregon is still not ready to return to normal.
“We underscore the urgent need for significantly increased testing capabilities,” they wrote. “Without significantly increasing testing, it is impossible to mitigate social distance measurements and avoid epidemic rebounds.”

Meanwhile, on Friday, Governor Kate Brown announced that Hillsboro’s Walgreens will begin offering rapid drive-through tests for those who meet federal and state eligibility criteria. Hospitals and private laboratories continue to expand testing capacity within the state.
“We are moving forward, one step at a time, to reopen the community and safely return to public life,” Brown said.
