Higher Blood Cancer Risk Expected in Children with Down Syndrome: Reported
According to a new study, the risk of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) (a type of blood cancer) in children with Down syndrome is higher than expected.
The study, led by researchers at the University of Chicago, Davis Health, and San Francisco, provided medical data for seven medical systems in the United States or more than 3.9 million children born in Ontario, Canada, between 1996 and 2016. I investigated.
It showed that 2.8 percent of children with Down syndrome were diagnosed with leukemia, compared to 0.05 percent of other children.
Compared to other children, children with Down syndrome were at increased risk of AML under the age of 5 and were at increased risk of acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) regardless of age.
In children with Down syndrome, ALL was more common between the ages of 2 and 4, while AML was more common in younger children and was highest in the first year of life.
For other children, the incidence of AML remained very low until 2014, but ALL peaked in 3 years and steadily declined until 8 years.
In addition, male children are more likely to be diagnosed with Down’s syndrome and develop leukemia than their corresponding children, according to a study published in The Journal of Pediatrics.
Professor Diana L. Millionetti of the University of California, Davis School of Public Health Sciences said:
Researchers urged parents of children with Down Syndrome to keep an eye out for signs of leukemia. Common symptoms include fatigue and pale skin, infections and fever, bleeding and bruising, shortness of breath and coughing. Parents are advised to consult a pediatrician if their child presents with any of these symptoms.
In addition, exposure to high levels of radiation, such as CT scans, indicates an increased risk of leukemia.
“Given the potential for ionizing radiation to increase the risk of leukemia in children with Down syndrome, images from other non-ionizing radiation modes such as ultrasound and MRI should be used as front-line imaging tests,” said the professor. Rebecca Smith-Bindman says. At UCSF.
