Quebec extends blockade of COVID-19 hotspot and reinstates curfew at 8 pm in Montreal, Laval

Quebec Prime Minister François Legor has announced an extension of emergency measures in Gatineau, Levis, Quebec City, and the Bose region after a surge in new COVID-19 cases.

Of the 1,609 new cases, Quebec City recorded the largest surge in 436 infections reported on Thursday, nearly doubling the 250 recorded on Wednesday.

In Quebec City, Levi’s and Gatineau, non-essential businesses and schools have been closed since last week, and curfew in these cities was pushed forward at 8 pm. On Monday, the same measures were implemented in several municipalities in the Bose region. The prime minister initially stated that emergency measures would be implemented for 10 days or until April 12.

Emergency measures are currently being extended until April 18.

In Montreal and Laval, the curfew at 8 pm on Sunday has been reinstated and restrictions have been tightened. It will be maintained until you are notified later.

According to Legault, there was no explosive growth in cases in the area, but the high population density makes it vulnerable to the ease of spread of the virus.

“The level of infection is very high and we expect it to accelerate further,” he said. “Once it starts to explode, it can quickly cause major problems in our hospital.”

Lego said it was just a precautionary measure.

“It will help us track what’s happening at home … I hope it helps us resist a little longer,” he said.

Legault said a third wave was sweeping the state and a blockade was needed.

Other areas monitored include Eastern Townships, Monteregie, Laurentian and Lanaudière.

Dr. Oracio Aruda, Director of Public Health, also said that people in the red and orange zones need to wear masks outdoors if they want to participate in activities with people outside the family bubble.

He said masks weren’t needed if people were just talking and sitting two meters away from each other. However, face masks are required for activities such as walking side by side and playing golf, where it is difficult to maintain a safe distance.

“Subspecies are more contagious,” Aruda said. “That’s why we’re taking more precautions.”

The premiere defended the recent tightening and relaxation of restrictions, which many call the “yo-yo” approach. He said he would act on the recommendations of public health, but the final decision would depend on him.

“When we lock in, it’s about protecting the physical health of the resident, and when we lift the restrictions, it’s a lot to help the resident’s mental health,” he said. ..
