Wastewater being studied at Marshall for SARS-CoV-2
Huntington, West Virginia (WSAZ)-Marshall’s Faculty of Science students have learned lessons that the professor couldn’t imagine before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last fall, Marshall staff and students began collecting and testing campus wastewater for the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19.
They were inspired by a program used nationwide to test urban sewage as a predictor of clinical outbreaks.
“Detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in wastewater is a good indicator that some people are shedding the virus in their sewers,” said David Neff, a lab manager in the chemistry department. ..
The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) has contacted Marshall to cooperate with a larger project of surveillance and surveillance at the state level. It is hoped that the state will create a system that will give it time to prepare for a surge in incidents.
“It seems like a positive sign to strengthen things here, improve the capabilities of the lab, and hire people to do the work,” Neff said.
“I learned a lot about long-term monitoring of infectious diseases,” said Dr. Chuck Somerville, Dean of the Faculty of Science.
The dean says he hopes not only to provide information about this crisis, but also to come up with a system that will help the state manage the next crisis.
