“Double masking” that?Proper fit is important, research results-consumer health news
Tuesday, April 20, 2021 (HealthDay News)-Researchers say that wearing two face masks that fit snugly can significantly reduce the risk of coronavirus infection.
But it’s important to have a good fit. A new study found that two non-conforming cloth masks do not provide as much protection as one snug-fitting surgical mask.
“We found that wearing two loose-fitting masks did not provide the benefits of filtration over one snug-fitting procedural mask,” said lead author Emily Sickbert-Bennett. She is an associate professor of infectious diseases at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The new findings follow a recent update from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and double masking is recommended.
In a series of lab tests, the UNC team evaluated the compatible filtration efficiency (FFE) of various masks.
They found that filtration efficiency varies from person to person due to the shape of each individual’s face and the fit of the mask.
Surgical masks (also known as procedural masks) are 40% to 60% effective in preventing COVID 19 size particles, while cloth masks are approximately 40% effective, without changing the fit.
Placing a cloth mask on top of the surgical mask improved the effect by about 20%. Layering with a snug-fitting sleeve-type mask, such as gaiters, provides additional protection.
It was found that when the cloth mask was placed on top of the surgical mask, the gap disappeared, the surgical mask approached the face, and the nose and mouth were always covered.
Wearing a surgical mask over a cloth mask improved FFE by 16%.The findings were published in the journal on April 16th. JAMA Internal Medicine..
