New COVID-19 cases plummet in Michigan
Michigan reported that there were far fewer cases of coronavirus in the week ending Sunday, adding 38,100 new cases. This is a 28.5% reduction from the previous week’s aggregate of 53,296 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Michigan was ranked first among the states in which the coronavirus spreads fastest per capita, according to USA TODAY network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data. Last week, cases of coronavirus in the United States decreased by 13.8% from the previous week, and 407,147 cases were reported. In 3% of the country’s population, Michigan had 9.36% of the country’s case last week. Nationwide, 11 states had more cases in the most recent week than in the previous week.
Michigan added untreated deaths throughout April, making weekly comparisons inaccurate.
Throughout Michigan, cases decreased in 77 counties, with the highest in Wayne, Auckland, and Macomb County.
Wayne County reported 7,032 cases and 107 deaths last week. A week ago, 10,048 cases and 77 deaths were reported. Throughout the pandemic, the county reported 150,249 cases and 4,540 deaths.
Oakland County reported 4,385 cases and 41 deaths last week. A week ago, 6,654 cases and 33 deaths were reported. Throughout the pandemic, the county reported 108,109 cases and 2,170 deaths.

Macomb County reported 4,424 cases and 62 deaths last week. A week ago, 5,917 cases and 44 deaths were reported. Throughout the pandemic, the county reported 92,204 cases and 2,176 deaths.
Livingston County reported 668 cases and 6 deaths last week. A week ago, 1,007 cases and 2 deaths were reported. Throughout the pandemic, the county reported 15,321 cases and 166 deaths.
Washtenaw County reported 793 cases and 4 deaths last week. A week ago, 1,392 cases and 3 deaths were reported. Throughout the pandemic, the county reported 24,931 cases and 263 deaths.

Michigan ranks 26th in the state, with at least one vaccination, and 41.2% of its population has been vaccinated at least partially. The national percentage is 42.2%, as shown by USA TODAY analysis of CDC data. The most used Pfizer and Moderna vaccines in the United States should be given twice at intervals of several weeks.
In the week ending Sunday, Michigan reported an additional 611,384 vaccinations, including 254,580 initial doses. Last week, the state received 662,384 vaccinations, including 368,778 initial doses. Overall, Michigan reported a total of 6,769,798 doses.
Within Michigan, the worst weekly outbreaks per capita occurred in the Huron, Muskegon, and Newaygo counties. Wayne County added the newest cases overall, with 7,032 cases. Macomb County, 4,424 cases. Oakland County has 4,385 people. Weekly cases increased in 6 counties from the previous week. The worst increase from last week’s pace was in the Muskegon, St. Joseph, and Schoolcraft counties.
In Michigan, 475 people were reported dead from COVID-19 during the week ending Sunday. The week before that, 371 people were reported dead.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 911,800 people have been coronavirus-positive and 18,409 have died from the disease in Michigan, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In the United States, 32,077,178 are positive and 572,200 are dead.
