UT students diagnosed with testicular cancer at age 17 share a story to educate others
Austin (KXAN) — April is Testicular Cancer Awareness Month.
It’s time to encourage men to learn the signs and symptoms of serious illness, and for Norman Torres, it’s time to educate.
“Preparing for college and wanting to perfect everything was really hard, especially for third graders,” Torres said. “It wasn’t part of my plan, and again cancer isn’t part of anyone’s plan.”
Norman was diagnosed with testicular cancer in a 17-year-old high school and is now a senior at the University of Texas at Austin. He hasn’t had cancer for almost five years.
“Testicular cancer is one of the most common cancers in young men and we don’t know it,” Torres said. “It’s not what’s being said, it’s common enough to expect us to talk about it, but we don’t.”
Dr. Christopher Sweeney, an oncologist at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, says early testing and screening can save lives.
“If 1 in 270 men have testicular cancer and the cure rate is about 95%, then 1 in 7,000 will actually die of testicular cancer,” said Sweeney. “What we actually saw was that later presentations would lead to worse results.”
