New Zealand awaits Medsafe approval and donates 250,000 AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines to Fiji | 1 News
The New Zealand government will donate 250,000 doses of AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine to Fiji. The announcement was made yesterday when Pacific countries (currently blocked) announced five new cases of the virus, some of which were the result of regional transmission.

The Fijian Ministry of Health said the first two cases were close household contacts in previously announced cases and tested positive while safe in the quarantine facility.
The third case is a former border quarantine passenger arriving in Nandy from Papua New Guinea on Friday, April 9. The fourth case is a glittering 68-year-old man. He tested positive after presenting to the outpatient department of Rakiraki Hospital for coughing and fever.
The fifth case tested is the border quarantine case. He is a 23-year-old man who traveled from Guyana to Fiji and arrived from Auckland on April 22 in NZ952. He tested positive while undergoing compulsory 14-day quarantine at Nandy’s border quarantine facility.
Meanwhile, the supply of donated vaccines comes from New Zealand’s national vaccine portfolio, announced by New Zealand’s Deputy Minister of Health and Foreign Affairs Aupito William Sio and Fiji’s Minister of Health and Medical Services Ifereimi Waqainabete.
“New Zealand and Fiji are working closely to help Fiji get a safe and effective Covid-19 vaccine as soon as possible,” said the Minister.
The two ministers emphasized that there are still many steps to be taken before the vaccine is delivered. The vaccine must be approved by Medsafe before it can be used in New Zealand and donated to Fiji.
Ministers met virtually last week to discuss New Zealand’s proposal. This includes $ 2 million in official development assistance to support Fiji’s vaccine deployment.

Masks, gloves and bottles of hand sanitizer have arrived in Fiji and are now used by police officers at the forefront of the country’s Covid-19 outbreak.
10,000 KN95 masks, 30,000 gloves and 300 hand sanitizers were provided by New Zealand and the United Nations Development Program.
