Third long-term sanatorium in Sudbury declares COVID-19 outbreak

An outbreak of COVID-19 was declared Tuesday night at Extended Care York in Sudbury.

According to the ministry’s instructions, a COVID-19 outbreak must be declared in a case confirmed in one laboratory of a resident or staff member.

Public health The total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 confirmed in the Sudbury & District service area was 58. This latest case is a woman in her twenties from Greater Sudbury who has not been in contact with, or traveled to, any known case of the novel coronavirus. She was tested on 25 April and is self-isolated.

Over the weekend, Extended Care York tested all residents and staff as part of a previously announced nursing home surveillance test.

Public Health Sudbury & Districts has worked closely with Extended Care York to ensure that all steps are taken to protect staff and residents. Stakeholders say the risk of infection in nursing homes remains low. None of the residents who were in contact with this employee were symptomatic. Public health continues to reach out to test staff and residents at all nursing homes.
