Michigan State University Team researcher It was found that a decrease in olfaction may indicate an increased risk of pneumonia in the elderly. Rapid odor loss, one of the most common symptoms of COVID-19, has been associated with other illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease and dementia for 20 years.

This study was published in the journal Lancet Healthy Longevity. “About a quarter of adults over the age of 65 have a weak sense of smell,” said Honglei Chen, a professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at Michigan State University.

“Unlike visual and hearing impairments, this sensory impairment has been largely ignored. More than two-thirds of people with a bad sense of smell do not know they have it,” Chen adds. I did.

In the first study of this type, Chen and his team found that there may be a link between a decrease in smell and an increased risk of hospitalization due to pneumonia. They analyzed 13-year health data from 2,494 elderly people aged 71-82 from the metropolitan areas of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Memphis, Tennessee.

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether decreased olfaction in the elderly is associated with an increased risk of developing pneumonia in the future.

Participants took a simple odor identification test (B-SIT) using common odors such as lemon and gasoline to determine if the odor was good, moderate or bad. Participants were then monitored for the next 13 years using clinical trials and follow-up phone calls to identify hospitalizations for pneumonia.

Researchers found that participants with a poor sense of smell were about 50% more likely to be hospitalized for pneumonia at any point during the 13-year follow-up period than those with a good sense of smell. Participants who had never had pneumonia (bad sense of smell) had an approximately 40% increased risk of developing pneumonia for the first time.

“As far as we know, this study provides the first epidemiological evidence that olfactory dysfunction (olfaction) is associated with a long-term high risk of pneumonia in the elderly,” said Chen’s research group postdoc. Said Yaqun Yuan.

This study provides new evidence that olfactory decline can have broader health effects beyond its association with Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

“This is just one example of what we know very little about this common sensory disorder. As a risk factor or marker, decreased olfaction in the elderly causes more chronic illnesses than we know. We may foretell. We need to think out of the box. ”
