Furious raccoon reported at Hopewell Township
Aggressive raccoons were collected by Hopewell Township Animal Control on Sunday, May 9, after biting a resident.
The animal was submitted for testing at the New Jersey Institute for Public Health and Environment, and the test provided to Township Health Officer Dawn Marling on May 11 was positive. Residents received post-exposure medical care and vaccinations. Livestock that may have been exposed on the premises will be re-vaccinated and will continue to be monitored.
The Department of Health asks residents and pet owners in the area who may have encountered this raccoon and other abnormally behaved animals to notify the town immediately. Animal management is available from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on weekdays at 609-537-0278 and on nights and weekends via the police station’s non-emergency line 609-737-3100.
Rabies is a fatal viral disease that can be prevented by avoiding contact with animals that may have rabies. Rabies poses a real threat, especially to unvaccinated livestock. This incident should serve as a reminder for pet owners to ensure that their animals are rabies vaccinated.
Pet owners should be careful not to run their pets on a large scale. This can pose a risk of encountering ferocious wildlife. Raccoons, skunks, coyotes, and unvaccinated cats and dogs are one of the animals that can develop rabies.

Post-exposure treatment is not required in all situations. Health departments and animal management staff work to find, capture, and test suspicious animals to determine if they are infectious.
