Why Canada’s support for India is important

With the daily increase in news of COVID-19 cases and deaths, Canada needs to step up to support India. Patients are being sent to the hospital due to a shortage of medicines. Hospitals are overwhelmed, and crematoriums and morgues continue to run out of space.
Since my family lives in India, it’s painful to hear the impact it has on my loved ones. Such situations must deal with compassion, justice, and empathy. These catastrophic conditions underscore the growing need to ensure equitable access to vaccines, medical products, and treatments to save lives.
There are fatal disparities between high-income and low-income countries such as Canada when it comes to access to vaccines. Wealthy countries buy supplies and prevent poor countries from accessing them.
In October 2020, India and South Africa filed for a waiver of intellectual property rights in COVID-19 devices, medicines and vaccines. Abandoning the trade-related aspect (TRIPS) of intellectual property rights will allow companies and institutions around the world to mass-produce vaccines without disputes from major pharmaceutical companies. Billions of doses will suffice to end the pandemic.

The United States recently announced support for TRIPS exemption. Surprisingly, Canada remains undecided. Last week, Trade Minister Mary Ng said Canada would continue to participate in the exemption conversation. Still, by not explicitly supporting the exemption, Canada continues to protect its monopoly on medicines and prioritize the interests of medicines over people’s lives.
There is a risk of a prolonged pandemic by limiting vaccine production. Time is important. Variants have emerged and have the potential to spread around the world.
The longer the pandemic, the greater the risk of further economic and social turmoil. To prevent this, vaccines need to be distributed fairly around the world. If you want to see concrete changes, you need to prioritize people’s lives over the interests of pharmaceutical companies. It’s time for Canada to advocate fair vaccine distribution in countries like India and support the TRIPS exemption.

Ongoing tragedy of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls
To those who came out on the day of the red dress and the day of national awareness for the missing and murdered indigenous women and girls and helped the families of the murdered indigenous women and girls. I am very grateful.
There has never been any collaborative effort by any level of government to stop this ongoing tragedy. If more than 1,200 non-indigenous women and girls are missing or killed, police and investigative forces will triple.
Isn’t it the time when our indigenous families were given the same help and respect?
