An interactive map allows Richardson residents to see weekly mosquito test results

Richardson provides an interactive mosquito map on its website, allowing residents to find the latest test results for their area.
During a May 17 working session of the city council, Health Director Bill Alsap of Richardson said the city began testing mosquitoes for West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne diseases in April. The city hasn’t seen a positive test so far this year, Alsap said.

The city’s mosquito management program will test samples for about six months a year, Alsap said.
Last year, Richardson collected and tested more than 5,200 mosquitoes from 324 mosquito traps set up in the city. According to Arsap, these mosquitoes had 13 positive tests for West Nile virus, with one virus outbreak in humans in 2020.
“One of the things we can’t promise is mosquito eradication,” said Arsap, explaining that Richardson’s mosquito control efforts are being made for public health purposes. “If you’re having a party at home, don’t treat mosquitoes.”
The city’s mosquito management process includes public education, water stoppage reduction, surveillance, larval larval control, and ultra-small truck-mounted sprayers to kill adult mosquitoes.
When the city needed to spray mosquitoes, Arsap explained that trucks would go out in a row between 9 pm and 4 am.

For 13 positive tests on the mosquito pool last year, Alsap said Richardson had carried out 26 spray missions.
