Family seeks £ 232,000 to bring 4-year-old boy to New York for cancer vaccine

A 4-year-old boy may not be able to get the life-saving vaccine he needs after the Covid-19 Lockdown hit an important financing scheme.

Paw patrol fanatic Liam Scott has spent most of last year on the rigorous treatment of neuroblastoma.

And while the end of his treatment is finally approaching, his family knows that cancer is likely to recur in the future.

Experimental vaccines can prevent the recurrence of life-threatening illnesses, but it’s only available in New York.

Parents Claire and Michael Scott, who live in Seven Oaks, Kent, need to raise £ 232,000 for treatment.

Scott spoke to a PA news agency, stating:

“As a parent, I can’t even explain my feelings because I want to be myself. I want to steal everything from my parents, but I can’t do anything.

“You feel very helpless.”

After several tests, Liam was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in July 2019 and Ms. Scott gave birth to his sister, Kylie.

Scott, 40, said she and her husband were “absolutely struck” at the time of diagnosis.

The doctor said it was unlucky because he had no family history of cancer.

Since then, Liam has not been given painful treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, or immunotherapy.

The final round of immunotherapy will end in late August when Liam finally hopes to remit.

But his cancer is at high risk of recurring, so his parents want to get him a life-saving vaccine as soon as possible.

Experimental treatments are being tested at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan.

Ms. Scott said:

“They say it’s hard to get rid of.”

However, some treatments and the associated flights and accommodations are expensive.

Families need to raise GBP232,000 and this task is made more difficult by the current Covid-19 situation.

Scott says:

“Unfortunately, all marathons and races we did in the pipeline were postponed because of the coronavirus.”

Former Dagenham and Redbridge player Charlie Holmes has given himself the big job of running 10 miles a day for two weeks after hearing Liam.

This feat is live streamed daily on Instagram and DJs are also joining to keep people entertained.

21-year-old Holmes told the PA news agency:

“I get a lot of support from all my friends and family.

“We need one with a large number of followers (to share the story) and that starts.”

Holmes refuses to allow Liam to set funding targets other than the full amount needed for treatment.
