Near the house: not the first pandemic
HIV has existed deep in my life since 1981, when the first cases of pneumonia and Kaposi’s sarcoma surfaced. I remember waking up at night worried that I might feel sick. AIDS was almost deadly at the time, and no one knew how it spread. To date, HIV has killed only 750,000 Americans.
As of today, hospitals in major cities were overwhelmed by patients. In San Francisco, these early AIDS patients were placed in an isolated room and left there. Imagine how many people died alone without the comfort of family and friends. Rev. Jerry Falwell explained, “The AIDS virus is not only God’s punishment for gays, but God’s punishment for a society that tolerates gays.”
I regret that many people die unnecessarily in this COVID-19 pandemic. It may have been stopped. The lack of urgency of the current administration does not surprise me.
It was six years into the HIV epidemic, 1987, before President Ronald Reagan made a speech about AIDS. Almost 90,000 Americans died of AIDS while he was president.
During the 15 years from 1981 to 1997, I was worried that I would succumb to HIV. I was sure it was next. It was in 1997 that safer drugs became routinely available, but I began to hope for my survival.
Now we have a new pandemic. And many of the leading AIDS doctors, scientists, and activists are interviewed in nightly news. Dr. Anthony Fauci is one of my heroes in the HIV war, and here again he becomes the face of knowledge and understanding, and at COVID-19, most people in the country trust their advice and strategies. .
Dr. David Ho of Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center was a scientist leading the discovery of HIV treatments. He is one of the people responsible for finding cures for coronaviruses.
Yale University epidemiologist and medical activist Greg Gonsalves was also an AIDS activist. He was a member of the ACT UP, a coalition of AIDS to unleash power. I was also a member of ACT UP. The HIV drug Kaletra is being tested against COVID-19 along with other AIDS drugs. These are all familiar terms. I thought these words were a thing of the past. Now they are back in the nightly news again.
The coronavirus surprised many people. But I am not so worried about my health. I am already living in a pandemic. You don’t have to worry more about HIV. I’m not careless or mediocre about it. I am wearing gloves and have a protective mask that I can wear outside the house.
Once again we hear from experienced professionals such as Anthony Fauci and I am confident that if we take this threat seriously, we can overcome this new outbreak. Being at home, keeping safe, and as a pandemic survivor, I can say I have hope.
