Next year’s flu season can pack a double punch with COVID-19
EVERETT — The flu season is over. For now, there’s one more thing to worry about.
But public health officials are still talking about influenza vaccination, and COVID-19 will make it even stronger this year.
“It’s going to be more important to get a flu shot in the fall,” said Dr Yuan Po Tu, an infectious disease specialist at Everett Clinic. “We’re seeing a resurgence of the coronavirus. When is the problem. Is it summer or fall-winter?”
Influenza is seasonal, usually from October to April. The course of COVID-19 is a wild card.
The flu deaths this season were less than last year. In Snohomish County, nine people died of the flu (26 from 2018 to 2019). The state as a whole claimed 96 lives this year, compared to 245 last year. Most had underlying illnesses.
COVID-19s have killed at least 109 people in the county, with more than 814 deaths in the state.
Because COVID-19 occurred after the peak of the flu season, it is difficult to determine how school closures and social distances affected the number of flu cases. In addition, hand washing and disinfection are more advanced, something that influenza experts have been preaching for many years.
But in the fall, if the flu and coronavirus are hit at the same time, this can pack a double punch. Both diseases are especially dangerous for the elderly and those with chronic health problems.
“If you’re really unlucky, you can be infected with both influenza and COVID at the same time,” says Tu.
Clinically, both viruses have similar initial symptoms.
“Both give you heat, chills, body aches, sore throats, headaches, and coughs,” he said.
Both are spread primarily by flu coughing, sneezing, or splashes when talking. But COVID-19 is a mystery in that it remains in the air and stays on the surface. It also causes other havoc with the body in other ways, including loss of smell and taste. The test can determine if it is influenza or COVID-19.
Most respiratory viruses increase in winter.
“If you had to fill a hospital with flu patients and fill a hospital with COVID patients, you’d run out of beds,” Tu said. “It was heavily stressed in COVID.”
The flu has a distinct season, which lasts from about October to April. COVID-19 may be a villain all year round.
Flu season cannot be predicted by stock. There are two major strains, A and B. Influenza A usually occurs first. It was B this year, but later moved to A shares.
Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates Influenza deaths have risen from 24,000 to 62,000 this season, with 39 to 56 million people affected by the flu. These are tentative and therefore extensive.
So far, over 65,000 Americans have died from COVID-19.
“COVID is not the flu,” Tu said. “It’s far more deadly than influenza, especially in the elderly, but not limited to the elderly. The last seven weeks have basically averaged 100 deaths per week from COVID (Washington). Compare that. ”
Fire does not anticipate a shortage of influenza vaccines, saying manufacturers can keep up with demand.
It is unknown when the COVID-19 vaccine will be given.
“No one is immune to this virus,” Tu said. “Everyone can get infected. It’s spreading. And it’s deadly.”
The influenza vaccine is a hope blow.
“You have the option of being vaccinated against the flu and reducing the risk of getting it,” Tu said. “Why do you want to take that risk in this day and age?”
