Chicago citizens look back on the 40th anniversary of the first AIDS patient in the United States
“I thought it would be the death penalty for me,” she said.

“From the beginning, when I was told I needed to start taking the drug, I was wondering why I didn’t have the vaccine, and I still think so,” McKnight said.
According to the Chicago Public Health Service, non-Hispanic blacks living in Chicago in 2019 will account for 56% of new HIV infections and about 57% of AIDS diagnoses.
“We are affected by racism, poverty and lack of access to health care,” said Cynthia Tucker, Vice President of Prevention and Community Partnerships at AIDS Foundation Chicago.
McKnight believes it’s important to use his own voice to assert change. She is one of dozens of women who shared their experiences on the “I’m Still Surviving” project, led by UIC professor of history Jennifer Briyer.
“I want people to know that they can survive,” McKnight said.
Brier said he needed a proper support system.
“Of course, I understand that care for people living with HIV requires housing. Childcare is also needed. Transportation is also needed. This is not just a biomedical solution,” she said. Said.
