New insights could lead to new treatments for COVID-19-ScienceDaily
Scientists have identified how and why some Covid-19 patients develop life-threatening blood clots. This can lead to targeted therapies that prevent this.
The study, led by researchers at the RCSI University of Medical and Health Sciences, Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
Previous studies have demonstrated that blood clotting is a significant cause of death in Covid-19 patients. To understand why the coagulation occurs, researchers analyzed blood samples taken from patients with Covid-19 in the Intensive Care Unit at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.
They found that the balance between a coagulation-causing molecule called von Willebrand Factor (VWF) and its regulator called ADAMTS13 was severely disrupted in patients with severe Covid-19.
When compared to the control group, the blood of Covid-19 patients had higher levels of procoagulant VWF molecules and lower levels of anticoagulant ADAMTS13. In addition, researchers have identified other changes in the protein that caused the reduction of ADAMTS13.
