Coronavirus NJ: Hackensack Teacher Distributes Groceries to Distressed Families
Kelly Carroll, a cook art teacher at Hackensack High School, was checking in with her students when the school closed. After talking to one parent, he found that she had problems placing food on the table.
“She was ashamed of me what her son was eating,” Carroll said. “Soon after she said so, it was just a click and we seem to have to do something for these kids.”
Carroll has sought donations from fast-growing food products from various suppliers and organizations.
“If you lose your job, you won’t have money, so how do you plan to feed the people at home?” Carroll said.
According to Carroll, 225 bottles of food are left in his front yard and parts of his neighbor’s yard.
“We give our families enough food for the week and support them that week,” he said. “It’s fresh fruits, fresh produce, dairy products, milk, butter, and eggs.”
Carroll says the need for the foods he offers is desperate.
“Large companies are gaining momentum,” he said. “The people who are our teachers are really helpful. They help with deliveries and donations. It’s an incredible outreach.”
Every Monday, Carol and his family fill the trash and many delivery drivers pick up food.
“Everyone is nourished and everyone remains safe,” he said. “Everyone comes down the block. There’s a cardboard with four names on it. You receive four trash cans and a chicken, and you receive a cardboard and its name and everything. I will go out and deliver it. “
Carol doesn’t know how long this will last. He is refrigerated and looking for more space, but is devoted to ensuring that his students, their families, and anyone who needs food can receive it.
“I will do this as much as I can,” he said. “Don’t get me wrong. I give it to people as long as people donate and companies want to bring food to us.”
