U-20 WNT AIMS AT THE RECORD TITLE OF THE SIXTH CONCACAF:
The U.S. National Women's Under-20 Team qualified for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup with a 6-0 victory over the Dominican Republic on Friday. Now, the United States has another mission to accomplish: winning the regional title. The United States and Mexico will face off for the Crown of Confederation on Sunday, March 8 at 1 p.m. ET (Concacaf Go, Concacaf Facebook, Concacaf YouTube and TUDN Xtra).

The United States has so far dominated the Concacaf U-20 Women's Championship – scoring 40 goals without conceding in its first six games of the tournament. The American team has scored more goals than any other nation in the competition and is the only team to have yet scored a goal. After a tough opening game that saw Mexico escape with a 2-1 victory over Puerto Rico, El Tri advanced to the semifinals, where it took a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw to beat Haiti and reach the championship game.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY: The United States has won five of eight previous Concacaf U-20 women's championships that have crowned a champion, the largest of any country. He reached the final of each tournament and has won four of the last five titles.

This year's championship game presents revenge for the 2018 Concacaf Women's U-20 Championship final, which saw Mexico lead the United States in a penalty shootout to win its first title from Concacaf. After falling behind in the first half, the current senior pillar of the WNT Tierna Davidson equalized just after the break, but the United States could not find a winner in regular time or in overtime and fell in PK 4-2. Three players return from the 2018 U.S. World Cup qualification roster – defender Naomi Girma, midfielder Brianna Pinto and striker Sophia Smith. The United States previously beat Mexico in the finals of the Concacaf Women's U-20 Championships in 2014 and 2010.

CLINCHED WORLD CUP TICKET: World Cup qualification was at stake for the United States' rematch against the Dominican Republic, but the United States made a blistering start to secure their place in Costa Rica / Panama 2020. Brianna Pinto double in the first four minutes of play, Trinity Rodman added a goal and Pinto completed a hat trick to give the United States a 4-0 lead in the 21st minute. In the second period, a goal by top scorer Mia Fishel and a second by Rodman doubled the head of the United States and won a ticket to the 2020 U-20 Women's World Cup. Goalkeeper Claudia Dickey and the American defense kept the sixth consecutive white sheet for the tournament team.

In the round of 16, Mexico crushed Grenada in pre-qualification 12-1 and, after a scoreless first half, pushed Trinidad and Tobago 4-0 to the quarterfinals.

The semi-final presented Mexico's biggest challenge to date in Haiti, a team that included many players who had played in the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup two years ago and a team that had reached the semi-final. After a first half in a dead end, the Caribbean nation rose to first place in the 56e with a brilliant free kick from star Melchie Dumornay, but Mexico's Joseline Montoya scored an equalizer on a goalkeeper's mistake in 68th. Things were tied for the remainder of the second half and extra time, which resulted in a semi-final on penalties. The shots on goal allowed Mexico to beat Haiti 4-2 while the four Mexican players converted and goalkeeper Wendy Toledo made a crucial stop to secure a place in the U-20 Women's World Cup and a date in final of the tournament with the United States.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT: This year marks the 10th edition of the Concacaf Women's U-20 Championship. The tournament began in 2002 as the CONCACAF U-19 Women's Championship.

In this new format, the tournament championship included 20 teams. Sixteen were drawn in four groups of four, while four advanced directly to the round of 16 via a pre-qualification tournament. The top three in each group qualified for the round of 16. From there, it became a knockout for the tournament final. The two semi-final winners qualified for the 2020 FIFA Women's Under-20 World Cup.

This year's U-20 Women's Championship sent only two teams to the U-20 Women's World Cup, rather than the usual three, due to the fact that the World Cup is played in the Concacaf region and that the hosts from Costa Rica and Panama both receive automatic submissions.

ABOUT U-20 WNT: Players born on or after January 1, 2000 are eligible for the 2020 U-20 Women's World Cup and head coach Laura Harvey has named players from three years of birth: 12 players born in 2000, five born in 2001 and three born in 2002. The lineup features two of the last three young American football players of the year in forward Sophia Smith (2017) and midfielder Brianna Pinto (2019) .

The schedule for the 2020 Concacaf U-20 Women's Championship at the start of the year after the university season has made the process of selecting players less difficult. Fifteen of the 20 players on the list are currently in college while three are playing for youth clubs. Smith is the only professional on the list after being drafted by the Portland Thorns last month, becoming the first teenager to be ranked No. 1 overall in the NWSL College Draft. Midfielder Talia DellaPeruta currently plays as an amateur in Germany with the club Frauen-Bundesliga FC Koln.
