Social distancing policies designed to deal with the coronavirus epidemic would soon be introduced, with government ministers warning elderly people to visit relatives before their arrival.

Authorities should tell retirees to stay at home and avoid crowded areas after the deadly virus killed two people in Britain this week and the number of people infected has risen to 206.

A woman in her 60s who also had underlying health conditions became the first victim in the UK when she tested positive and died on Thursday.

The NHS confirmed on Friday that a man in the early 1980s with underlying health conditions died after catching the virus.

The ministers are said to be negotiating with retailers and delivery companies on the supply of supplies to vulnerable people who self-isolate, The Daily Telegraph reports.

They are expected to announce that Britain has reached the point where all hope of ending an epidemic has been lost next week.

On Saturday, 42 other patients were confirmed to carry the virus, bringing the UK total to 206.

On Friday, the UK saw 49 new cases, which means there has been a slight decrease in the number of new cases per day.

Helen Dickinson, managing director of the British Retail Consortium (BRC) on behalf of the supermarkets, said she was confident that the limited availability of long-life products and hand sanitizer would not last.

The BRC is working constructively with government officials to ensure that supermarkets remain supplied and that supply chains continue to function normally for the foreseeable future.

Andrew Opie, Director of Food and Sustainability for BRCs, also said that retailers are taking steps to meet the growing demand for certain hygienic and long-life products.
