Boris Johnson appoints special envoy for girls' education
Students from a school in Bournemouth were invited to attend the International Women's Day reception at Downing Street.
On Thursday, ten Grade 9 students from Glenmoor and Winton Academy School attended the reception and heard presentations from famous women in business, media and sports.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "It is a privilege to welcome girls from the Glenmoor and Winton academies today to the Downing Street reception and I am sure that with the trainings fantastic that they receive, there will be future astronauts, scientists and Olympic champions among them.
"I want to make sure that every girl receives a superb education and encourage girls to consider all the possible paths that open up for them in life."
As part of the event, the Prime Minister participated in a roundtable discussion with the founder of STEMettes – a social enterprise that encourages girls between the ages of five and 22 to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics ( STEM subjects).
Anne-Marie Imafidon was accompanied by the editor-in-chief of Grazia Hattie Brett and the Olympic medalist Dame Kelly Holmes, and they discussed the professional aspirations and challenges faced by women in the workplace today.
The event brought together around fifty girls in the 9th year of school who have to make their GCSE choices.
The students were invited to participate in a question and answer session with the panelists and a student from the school questioned the panelists about the challenges women face today.
