Syrian refugee working in London hospital said he felt “betrayed” by the British government after learning that his family would not be allowed to stay in the country indefinitely if he died while helping to combat the spread of the new coronavirus.

“I really appreciate the applause that you and your fellow government ministers make every week,” said Akkad.

“Today, however, I felt betrayed, stabbed in the back. I was shocked to find that you decided, your government decided, to exclude me and my colleagues who work as cleaners and porters and social workers, who are all on minimum wage, you decided to exclude us from the bereavement regime. “

Akkad told Reuters last month that he assumed the role of hospital cleaner to thank the community that welcomed him and made him “home”. He said he worked at Whipps Cross Hospital five days a week, and described it as one of the most difficult challenges of his life.
