Prime Minister Boris Johnson will not be investigated for links to Jennifer Arcuri

May 21 (UPI) – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will not face a police investigation for misconduct related to his dealings with an American businesswoman while he was mayor of London, officials said on Thursday.

The Independent Bureau for Police Conduct said in a report that it had found no evidence that Johnson had rewarded or favored U.S. tech entrepreneur Jennifer Arcuri, who founded the Innotech Summit and Hacker House in 2014.

The IOPC began investigating last summer to find out whether Johnson had used his political position to illegally grant financial benefits and access to Arcuri. Johnson was mayor of London between 2008 and 2016.

Arcuri’s company had received about $ 150,000 in public funds for sponsorships and had gone on a trade mission with Johnson abroad.

“We found no evidence to indicate that Mr. Johnson influenced the payment of any sponsorship money to Ms. Arcuri or that he influenced or played an active role in securing her participation in trade missions,” said the IOPC.

While the office cleared him of criminal charges, he admitted that Johnson may have had an inappropriate relationship with Arcuri.

“There was evidence to suggest that these officers making decisions regarding sponsorship funds and participation in trade missions believed that there was a close relationship between Mr. Johnson and Ms. Arcuri, and this influenced their decision making “said the OICP. “Our review established that there was a close association between Mr. Johnson and Ms. Arcuri and there may have been an intimate relationship.”

The IOPC report stated that the relationship was not criminal but that it may have violated a code of conduct.

Johnson previously said the investigation was politically motivated and denied having been charged with acting inappropriately while he was mayor of London.

“Such vexatious allegations of irregularity in power were false and unfounded,” a spokesman for Johnson said on Thursday. “It was not a question of the police, and we consider it a waste of time for the police.”

Johnson was hospitalized for several days in March for coronavirus disease. Last month, fiancee Carrie Symonds gave birth to the couple’s son, Wilfred.
