The American man who videotaped cell phone video footage of Ahmaud Arbery’s deadly shooting in Georgia state was arrested Thursday and charged with murder in his death.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that William “Roddie” Bryan, 50, was arrested for criminal murder and a criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment.

Arbery, an unarmed black man, was killed on February 23 after a white father and son armed themselves and chased him after spotting the 25-year-old man running around their neighborhood. More than two months passed before authorities arrested Gregory McMichael and his son, Travis McMichael, accused of serious murder and aggravated assault.

Bryan lives in the same subdivision, and the video he took in the cab of his vehicle helped spark a national uproar when he fled online. Bryan’s lawyer Kevin Gough did not immediately return a phone message.

Gregory McMichael, a retired local attorney’s investigator, told police he thought Arbery was a burglar. He said that Arbery had attacked his son before he was shot.

Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, said she thought her son was just jogging.

Delay in criminal charges and cell phone video of the shooting disclosed shortly before the May 7 arrests fueled national outrage over Arbery’s death, with many saying he was targeted because that he was black.

Defense lawyers for the McMichaels last week warned of haste to the trial. They said they soon plan to request a preliminary hearing from a Glynn county judge – a hearing at which new details may be revealed.

Gregory McMichael worked as an investigator for the local attorney for more than two decades before retiring last year.

Family lawyers for Arbery and others blamed the delay in the arrests in part on the elder McMichael’s ties to local law enforcement. The McMichaels were not charged until after the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was first introduced in early May.

Meanwhile, three district attorneys have decided to pursue the case, which now resides with Cobb County district attorney on the Atlanta subway.
