Pascal Soriot links the AstraZeneca jab to the UK’s low hospitalization rate.

According to Pascal Soriot, head of the UK-Swedish pharmaceutical company, the AstraZeneca vaccine could help prevent severe COVID-19 disease in older people for longer, and the UK currently has lower hospitalization rates than most parts of Europe.

The vaccine, developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University, has been widely used across the UK, and hospitalizations continue to decline despite rising infections.

In Europe, however, a surge in infections and hospitalizations has put health care at stake. Austria, with 28.7 hospitalizations per 100,000 people, re-enacted a full lockdown this week to slow the spread of the coronavirus, compared to 12 per 100,000 in the UK.

In response to Soriot’s remarks, the scientists said too few studies have measured vaccine performance side-by-side to determine a specific correlation. Soriott also emphasized that there is no “proof” of the link and that additional data is needed.

“It’s really interesting to look at the UK,” he told the BBC Today program. “Infections are at their peak, but hospitalizations aren’t that many compared to Europe.”

When asked if this had anything to do with the block’s lack of use of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine in the elderly, Soriot replied: This vaccine has been shown to stimulate T cells to higher levels in the elderly.”

T cells that help the body “remember” past infections and kill pathogens when they reappear affect how long people remain resistant to previously infected or vaccinated diseases.

He said this, arguing that it had something to do with using the Oxford/AstraZeneca jab on older people. But we need more data to analyze this and get an answer.”

The UK used the Oxford/AstraZeneca jab a lot in the early days of its vaccination campaign, as it started vaccinating older and more vulnerable people first. Many European countries have stopped using it, especially in young people, because of fear of a possible association with rare blood clots.

Lance Turtle, an infectious disease expert at the University of Liverpool, has shown through experiments and real-world experience that the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine is “superior” in preventing serious illness and death, but has adequately evaluated its effectiveness compared to other vaccines. He said there was no clinical trial.

“This will be the only way we can confirm that one vaccine is actually more effective than another,” Turtle said. Alternative jabs produced by Pfizer and Moderna are made using a state-of-the-art technology called messenger RNA.

suggestion

Eleanor Riley, professor of immunology and infectious disease at the University of Edinburgh, said the experiment suggested that the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine “initiated higher levels of T cells than the mRNA vaccine.” That means it can “provide long-term protection against hospitalization and death,” she added.

But because the vaccines were released at different times and to different groups of people with different underlying health conditions, making direct comparisons was very difficult, she noted.

Matthew Snape, an associate professor of pediatrics and vaccinology at the University of Oxford, who compared antibody and T-cell responses in people who received an Oxford/AstraZeneca injection with Pfizer and lead investigator on the Com-COV trial, also cautioned.

According to his study, “during a single dose [Oxford/AstraZeneca] The vaccine induces a better T-cell response than the Pfizer mRNA vaccine, but immediately after the second dose, the T-cell response was very similar.”

The Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine faces an uncertain future after being removed from the booster program the UK relies on to avoid further restrictions.
