Senator Katarina Zec and rookie Katia Gallegos have been the face of UTEP's female basketball program all season and now they have something to prove.

Zec was named the second All-Conference USA team and Gallegos, a former Franklin, was named to the freshman team. Gallegos, who led C-USA in assists during the regular season, is the first miner to be named to the first-year student team in five years.

"This year has been very unique for freshmen from C-USA teams," said coach Kevin Baker. “Many freshmen have had a huge impact on their respective teams. Katia being selected to the All-Freshmen team is still a bigger accomplishment than usual.

"She proved to be not only one of the best recruits in C-USA, but also one of the best players in the league. She led the conference with assists and was "One of the main reasons for our turnaround this season. Katia is a special player who will continue to be honored and set career career records at UTEP."

Zec, which is UTEP Eighth best scorer of all time with 1,112 career points, was the best UTEP scorer this year with 12.8 points per game and reached double digits in 24 of the 31 games.

"No one works harder or is more committed than Katarina Zec," said Baker. “So to see her becoming a conference player is not surprising. There isn't a player who deserves it more than Kat. She has been an incredible player for us all season and has had a solid senior year. She is one of the best players in C-USA and is proof that hard work and total dedication pay off. "

UTEP faces Florida Atlantic in its opening match of the C-USA tournament at 12:30 p.m. MDT Wednesday at the Ford Center in Frisco.
