UK urges allies to unite on ‘Russian attitude toward Ukraine’

Britain urged its allies to “present a united front on Russia’s attitude toward Ukraine” at the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Liverpool this weekend.

“We must defend ourselves from the growing threat of our adversaries,” British Foreign Minister Liz Truss said at a meeting of foreign ministers of the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.

“And we must unite strongly against aggressors who seek to limit the boundaries between freedom and democracy.”

Britain warned in a statement that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was “a serious strategic error and would have serious consequences”.

Many Western countries have expressed concern over the buildup of troops on the Ukrainian border, saying they will impose economic sanctions if Russia invades Ukraine.

Moscow denies plans to attack Ukraine and accuses Kiev of having an aggressive plan of its own.

Truss also said he wants to work with other countries “to give liberal democracies an alternative to Russian gas supply” amid Europe’s natural gas crisis.

The US State Department announced that top diplomat Karen Donfried will visit Kiev and Moscow to “strengthen the United States’ commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.”

Afterwards, Donfried will travel to Brussels to speak with NATO and its European Union allies.

The meeting was the first of Germany’s new foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, since the new government took office last week.

Meanwhile, negotiations are continuing in Vienna in an attempt to bring the parties back under the Iran nuclear deal.

Climate change, tensions in the western Balkans, Afghanistan and North Korea were also on the agenda of the meeting, attended by both foreign and development ministers from the G7 countries.

The UK wants to work more closely with Asian countries as part of an “Indo-Pacific trend” after the UK left the European Union last year. This is to stimulate British trade and check China’s dominance.

Truss has invited ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to the Liverpool meeting, although many will be attending remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
