Missouri man breaks self-quarantine and goes to school

A Missouri man disregarded instructions from self-quarantine health officials when he and his daughter attended a school dance after his other daughter tested positive for coronavirus.

Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School wrote on Facebook that classes were canceled Monday and the school was weighing its next decision after the father-daughter dance on Saturday evening. In a separate post, the school courses canceled for the rest of the week.

"Our campus will be cleaned up at the hospital," wrote the school. "The school buildings will be sanitized and ready to be returned on March 23 after the spring break."

St. Louis County Director General Sam Page said live press conference that the infected woman contacted health officials on Thursday after becoming symptomatic. She and her family were ordered to self-quarantine, and Page said the officials were counting on "common sense and good will", assuming the whole family would comply.

"The way the family reacted to this situation is actually the story of two reactions. It's about how people should and shouldn't react to the coronavirus," said Page.

The woman was informed on Saturday of the suspected positive and followed the instructions of health officials to remain in quarantine, said Page. He added that she was to be "congratulated for following the instructions of the health department".

However, the woman's father and his other daughter attended the school dance on Saturday night at the Ritz-Carlton in Clayton. The two left the dance after learning of the woman's suspected positive, the school said in a statement, according toKTVI-TV.

There are nearly 114,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus worldwide, including 738 in the United States on Monday evening.

Oak Hill and VillaDuchesne are two schools on the same campus Oak Hill is a co-educational school serving children up to the sixth grade, while VillaDuchesne is a school for girls in grades 7 to 12.

According to Mr. Page, the father has been advised to stay at home, or an official quarantine will be issued "which will force him and the rest of his family to stay with them by force of law".

Health officials have been in touch with the woman and her family "several times a day" since Thursday and have repeatedly asked the family to self-quarantine, said Page.

It is not known how many people were at the dance. The rest of the woman's family, including the father, had no symptoms of COVID-19.
