Rice entrusts her confidence to the C-USA tournament
More than anything, this season's rice owls have persisted.
Rice opened with four wins in her first five games. But the excitement around the team's best start under coach Scott Pera waned when he lost eight of his top nine in 2020.
As the team (15-16, 7-11) prepares to open the Conference USA tournament against Florida International (18-13, 9-9) on Wednesday, it does so after winning six of its last nine – a round that started with an upheaval in North Texas, seeded on February 1.
"We are clicking at the right time. Even though we thought we had slipped to UTEP, we have won six of our last nine games," said Owls goalkeeper Drew Peterson. "We have the confidence of our guys and nothing better than a group of confident guys who click at the time of the tournament. "
Rice faced a less certain path to the tournament when he entered the bonus game in late February.
Last season, he moved to 11th place. This year he went 2-2 but hit his ticket after consecutive wins against Middle Tennessee and Southern Miss. The Owls will be the 12th seeded seed after a trio of losses against the 11th seeded UTEP this season.
But the Owls' struggles against the bottom of the conference betray their growth in a season where Pera has more depth and return talent than he has had since he became head coach in 2017.
"As a team, I think we definitely have a better shot this year," said Peterson. "We come after beating many of the best teams in the conference and the FIU, which is a team we know we can handle."
The Owls defeated FIU 92-78 in mid-January. If they do it again on Wednesday, they will advance to play Charlotte, whom they beat 70-54 in mid-February. The winner of this game could face North Texas in the semi-finals.
And for what it's worth, this Rice team did a lot better than the last team with four double-digit goalscorers. The 2007-08 Owls ended the season on a 20-game losing streak and have only won three all year.
"Last year was brand new," said rice guard Chris Mullins. "This year everyone is back, so we know what it's like to be in this type of environment and what it takes to win. … Nothing will sneak up on us and shock us this year. "
Mullins went to Arlington High School, about 45 minutes southwest of where the tournament will be held in Frisco.
He said that he and the other three Rice second-year students were largely thrilled to participate in last year's tournament. This year, he believes familiarity will garner attention. He said the key to Wednesday's game was the Owls 'ability to navigate the Panthers' press.
"I think we had a pretty good draw if you look at our way to the finals," said Peterson. "We were able to slow down and break the press (CRF) with ease the last time, but we know they will be better prepared. Everything becomes more difficult in the conference tournament, so we know they are going to come out ready and we have to come with the same energy. "
