Boris Johnson described a "rocket attack" that killed three members of the coalition at a military base in Iraq where British troops are stationed.

Two of those who died were American troops, according to an American official who declined to comment on the nationality of the third death.

U.S. Army spokesman Colonel Myles Caggins said more than 15 small rockets hit the base of Camp Taji north of Baghdad.

A dozen people were injured in the assault.

The Prime Minister said: "Our soldiers and women work tirelessly every day to maintain security and stability in the region – their presence makes us all safer.

"The Minister of Foreign Affairs has met with the United States Secretary of State and we will continue to liaise with our international partners to fully understand the details of this heinous attack."

The Iraqi government has said that the Katyusha rockets were fired from a launcher on a truck.

The vehicle was found in the Rashdiya district of northern Baghdad, approximately 16 kilometers southeast of the base.

Three missiles were still inside the launcher.

A Defense Ministry spokesperson said he was aware of an incident involving British service personnel at the base, which is used for training and advisory missions.

Officials have not said which group they say launched the rocket attack, but Kataib Hezbollah or another Iranian-backed Shia militia group is likely.
