Boris Johnson does not remove "rape clause" despite labeling as "injustice" | Political News

The government will not remove the "rape clause" from Universal Credit, although Boris Johnson described it as an "injustice".

The Prime Minister's comments in the House of Commons on Wednesday seemed to signal a potential change in approach.

A tax credit modification clause, limiting the benefit to the first two children of a family, means that women who have other children as a result of rape may be exempt.

Government social assistance reforms provide for a limit of two children to receive the child component of the universal credit

This stipulation has been controversial, as victims of sexual assault must provide evidence in order to qualify for an exemption.

Questioning Mr. Johnson on Prime Minister's policy questions, Jeremy Corbyn described him as "absolutely horrible".

The Labor leader asked: "Why does he think it is fair that 200 mothers have to prove to the government that their child was conceived as a result of rape so that they can keep their child tax credits? "

Mr Johnson replied: "On his point about benefit recipients, he draws attention to an injustice and we will do our utmost to remedy it."

Mr Corbyn said he hoped the PM's response meant that he was going to legislate to end the two-child policy.

However, a number 10 source dismissed the claim, saying instead that Johnson was critical of the event of any survivor who had to inform the government of her rape.

The source said: "It is really important that women in these horrible circumstances get the help they need and the PM believes it should be done in the most compassionate way possible.

"At no time should a claimant disclose her rape to a labor and pension service or to an HMRC staff member.

"It can be done with a trusted partner, such as a social worker doctor or a rape survivor, to ensure that it is applied with as much sensitivity as possible."

Pushed further on whether or not to keep the "rape clause", the source replied: "The Prime Minister agreed that reporting any rape to the government would be an injustice".

SNP MP Alison Thewliss, who campaigned to remove the clause, predicted earlier that Mr. Johnson was wrong.

"I guess he doesn't know what he's talking about," she said.

"The two-child limit and the rape clause stigmatize, impoverish and must be removed."
