When will the 2 meter rule be relaxed? Why Boris Johnson plans to reduce social distance to allow schools and pubs to reopen
The British government is facing increasing calls to relax the restriction, with former cabinet minister Sir Iain Duncan Smith and Damian Green saying it is essential for the economy.
Should the rule be relaxed?

Despite the gradual easing of lockdown restrictions in England, Westminster and the business community fear that maintaining the two-meter social distance rule will hamper recovery.
Labor leader Sir Keir Stamer has criticized the government’s efforts to bring elementary school children back to schools, saying it would be easier to do so if social unrest was more relaxed.
MEPs also called for a change of direction to help restart the economy, saying that reducing the restriction by two meters could help pubs and reopen again.
Business secretary Alok Sharma said this week that companies wanted the rule to be revised for economic reasons, while Sir Iain said maintaining the rule would mean pubs, restaurants and cafes could not recover completely, or even reopen.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Sir Iain said: The number one and most important priority for unlocking the economy is to reduce the distance to one meter.
The difference between one and two meters is the difference between opening the economy properly and seeing it bump down without being able to rebound.
The hotel industry simply cannot make a living two meters away.
It’s restrictive to a meter but at least they can get close to making it work. And it is impossible to properly manage public transport two meters away.
Will the two-meter rule be relaxed?
Speaking at the daily Downing Street press conference on Wednesday, June 10, Johnson said the government would keep the two-meter rule under constant review.
However, he warned that there is a balance of risk to be struck, and caution is still needed at the moment, suggesting that the rule will not be relaxed for now.
Mr. Johnson said: I think the question for me is how far we can reach the incidents of the disease. It is not as low as I would like.
Right now, I think we have to be careful, and I think the overwhelming majority of the public share that opinion.
Sir Patrick Vallance, Chief Scientific Adviser to the United Kingdom, said at the briefing that the two meter advice is “not a scientific rule”, but is a risk-based assessment.
He said: “This is a risk-based assessment when the risk decreases and the risks are associated with distance, so the risk drops after 2m.
“It is wrong to describe this as a scientific rule that says it is two meters or nothing – it is not what the advice was and it is not what it is now.”
MEPs called on the Prime Minister to adopt a one-meter policy instead, following advice from the World Health Organization.
These guidelines are already followed by several countries, including France, Denmark and Singapore.
