Opening the facts of the case via a Skype link, prosecutor Simon Davis told the court that Ms. Cooper was listening to the proceedings.

Davis told judge Samantha Crabb: “As you would imagine, letters to the Prime Minister are examined long before they ever reach the Prime Minister.

“On September 14, 2018, a letter to Theresa May was received at the Cabinet Office in London.

“The letter said, ‘I’m going to kill you. The British jihadists are going to kill the police at the gates. Then I’m going to kill you and then eat your corpse.”

Malik was arrested in September 2019 and said he wrote the letters because he was “tired of hearing about Theresa May” and wanted to scare him.

It also appeared that a postage-paid envelope in Birmingham was opened at Mrs. Cooper’s office on May 20 of last year, who said, “You will die the same way as Jo Cox”.

The letter also posed a threat of rape to Ms. Cooper, who had previously been the target of a murder plot by a neo-Nazi terrorist.

New letters to Mrs. Cooper threatened: “Jo Cox was murdered by Thomas Mair and we will kill you the same way.

“We are following you, be ready to die. Nice car you may need to have it checked when you turn it on, it might break.”

The court learned that Ms. Cooper had made a witness statement, in which she said that she was “angry and bewildered” by the threats.

Davis said in court: “As an MP, she got to know people who expressed their anger and frustration with MPs.

“The third letter was very worrying. The threat of putting a bomb in his car frightened him.

“In a way, these three letters could not have come at a worse time. This made him believe that the person responsible for writing the letters would have followed through on his threats.”

Malik was sent back to prison in October of last year and then sent a letter to Ms. Phillips’ constituency office.

Davis said of MP for Birmignham Yardley: “She opened mail received from the House of Commons. It contained a letter that appeared to come from a prison environment.”

The letter contained a reference to jihadists and a death threat to the member and her family.

In a statement read to the court by the prosecutor, Ms. Phillips said that the threats had left her shocked, upset, alarmed and distressed.

The MP said: “The murder of Jo Cox, one of my best friends, gives me some perspective on the threat to myself and my family.”

A few days after Malik was charged with six of the offenses in December 2019, two more letters he sent were intercepted in the post room of HMP Birmingham.

One contained new threats against Ms. Phillips, while another was addressed to Prime Minister, Mr. Johnson.

No statement from Mr. Johnson was read to the court, which learned that the letter sent to him said, “I will kill you and your girlfriend. I will detonate you both.

“I’m going to do it for Christmas.”

Offering mitigating measures, defense attorney Andrew Jackson described the letters as “the rants of an upset individual who frankly wallows in attention seeking”.

Jackson said, “This is a physical wreck – he’s a 52-year-old diabetic with heart disease and asthma.

“He suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is registered blind and has a bilateral leg amputation.

“Although terrifying as (the crimes) have undoubtedly been, he is incapable of delivering real violence.”
