UK nuclear power plant drone report includes ‘swarm’ and ‘red light’

Newly released files show that the drones were confiscated by security personnel at the nuclear facility, along with reports of swarms at the UK facility.

Unmanned aerial vehicles have been witnessed or secured at sites across the country amid concerns about security threats posed by technology.

Under the Freedom of Information Act, 20 reports were published on between 2020 and last year. In two cases, drones landed in the area and secured by staff.

There have been several other reports of nuclear objects, such as nuclear reactors, boats, and submarines, or aircraft near facilities.

Another one-line log that gives some details and doesn’t identify the location says: The drone has landed on the site. recorded.

Last year, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) handled three cases. Another report says:

Eyewitness accounts of the general public were also recorded. One report said: The general public said they saw a white van and a man and also observed two lights in the sky and believed they were drones.

Details passed in in other responses show that there are reports of connected drones engaging in the same operations or swarms attacking at nuclear-licensed sites in the UK.

According to the Nuclear Regulatory Authority, the incident occurred between January 2014 and July 2020, with no further details provided.

The report comes at a time of heightened tensions between the West and China and Russia, each of which relates to the UK’s physical and cyber espionage activities.

In April, a source told The Sunday People that Chinese spies in the UK were targeting highly sensitive facilities such as military bases and nuclear power plants with air systems.

Peter Burt, who has studied the use of drones and is part of the Nukewatch monitoring network, wants UK authorities to provide a complete picture of the incident and the potential threats posed.

Burt told A swarm of drones flying over nuclear facilities in other countries, such as France and the United States, for example, has been clearly captured. Thus, this raises questions about the security of our own nuclear facilities. I think it’s a fair question to ask if similar incidents have occurred in this country, and if so, who do you think is behind it?

When we submitted our Freedom of Information Act request on this matter, we received insufficient information from the Department of Defense and we believe there is a clear public interest in releasing more information.

A potential threat was demonstrated in the United States in July 2020, when a swarm was discovered above a nuclear reactor in Arizona over two nights.

Official reports show that the known incident involving six spacecraft at the Palo Verde nuclear power plant each time remains unresolved.

Records released in the UK at the time do not make it clear who operated the drone or whether one of the reports led to further investigation, and the Department of Defense is seeking further details through a Freedom of Information Act request. The attempt was rejected.

The UK Government is currently working to strengthen the UK’s response to the threats posed by increasingly sophisticated and widely used air systems at home and abroad.

These include Defense and Security Accelerator, a project to find innovative ways to mitigate the system’s hostile use, and RAF’s Project Synergia, which provided counter drone technology.

Mr. Bert said: There are many problems with nuclear security and it is quite reasonable that the Department of Defense and nuclear operators want to keep the place as safe as possible.

At the same time, it is no secret that people are using drones for malicious purposes, both globally and domestically, so I think dialogue and government measures are necessary.

If they cannot address it effectively, it raises the question of whether we should consider alternative means of development.

Drones, along with all types of unmanned aerial vehicles, are banned from flying in the airspace of nuclear facilities under the 2016 Air Navigation Order.

The Defense Department, which declined to release further details about the reported incident, cited a national security waiver, saying that the information would be detrimental to British defense.

“We are taking strong security measures in all defenses, including nuclear bases, to respond to all such incidents,” the spokesperson said.

While we cannot comment on specific security measures or procedures, we continue to invest in a variety of measures to combat future threats, including anti-drone technology.
