On Thursday, Adam Silver announced "at least" a 30-day hiatus for the NBA as the league assesses potential next steps following the COVID-19 pandemic.
The questions that arise from such a statement are abundant in equal parts and unanswered at least for now. Key financial considerations include how much a prolonged hiatus could dampen revenue for the 2019-2020 season and how drastically it could affect the salary cap and player compensation.
In the days following the NBA's indefinite suspension of the season, some layers of these questions begin to come unstuck. Friday, Adrian Wojnarowski and Bobby Marks of ESPN reported that the NBA players' union has circulated a note detailing a provision in the NBA CBA that could "free owners to pay players a percentage of their wages if the rest of the season is lost due to the coronavirus pandemic . "
The provision grants owners a license to use a clause called force majeure in the event of scenarios such as epidemics. If the league decides to go this route, players will lose 1 / 92.6 of their salary for each game missed during an extended hiatus.
To be clear, Wojnarowski and Marks reported that no discussion had yet taken place on the invocation of the force majeure event clause and that the NBA and NBAPA were still hoping to complete the 2019-2020 season in the middle of summer.
