PTO US Open 2022 results: Collin Chartier shocks the stars in Dallas – Elite News

Four weeks ago, American Collin Chartier won the IRONMAN Mont-Tremblant in Canada.

He may have started Sunday’s PTO US Open ranked 28th, but an upset victory in the Lone Star State will go down as, by far, the best day of his triathlon career to date. With a top prize of $100,000, this is sure to be the biggest payday of his life to date.

Honors even in (hot) water

With water temperatures reported at around 27°C, of course, no wetsuits today for the 2km swim in Lake Carolyn.

Unlike swimming at the PTO Canadian Open in Edmonton, there was a large line of swimmers leading the race. Athletes may have pulled back a few percentage points after seeing the struggles some of the elite women faced late in the race on Saturday.

Aaron Royle (AUS) was first up the exit steps in 26:38, but immediately behind were Sam Laidlow (FRA), Ben Kanute (USA), Daniel Bækkegård (DEN). Vetle Bergsvik Thorn (NOR), Josh Amberger (AUS), Nick Kastelein (AUS), Tom Bishop (GBR) and many more… a total of 20 athletes in 22 seconds.

Key names further back included Frederic Funk (+1:00), Magnus Ditlev (+1:09), Sebastian Kienle (+2:30), Lionel Sanders (+2:37) and Sam Long (+2 :42).

With so many athletes about to start the bike, it would take about one lap of the seven-loop circuit to see the shape of the race become clear.

‘Flo’ rider – Angert takes control on the bike

As he did in Edmonton (but without the injured Alistair Brownlee this time), Sam Laidlow was the first to move on the bike. After 20km he was alone in the lead, with Florian Angert nine seconds behind, but 30 seconds ahead of the main chasing peloton. Still outside the top 20, Sam Long and Lionel Sanders were nonetheless the fastest riders on the course and, as expected, enjoying the sheer power of the time trial-friendly bike terrain.

Jump another 20km forward to the midpoint (40km) of the ride, and it was still Laidlow leading the way. Angert was still close behind in second (+0:06), but the chasers were now just over a minute behind, a group including Mika Noodt (GER), Bækkegård, Bishop, Sam Appleton (AUS), Royle , Kyle Smith (NZL), Chartier (USA), Pablo Dapena Gonzalez (ESP), Ditlev and Long.

Lionel Sanders was still just over 20 seconds behind that group and hopes to land the same take Long already had soon.

Approaching the last quarter of the race, the athlete of the ERDINGER team, Angert, now led the way. Second recently at the World Long Distance Triathlon Championships (over the same distance of 100 km), he is still strong in all disciplines.

The German was 29 seconds ahead of early leader Laidlow, but the chasers were now led by bike powerhouses Long and Ditlev, with only Chartier and Bækkegård remaining in this selected foursome. A little over a minute behind Angert, it was still up for grabs, especially with the temperature rising.

The attrition continued in the final stages. Bækkegård couldn’t stay with the chasers, Laidlow was caught by Ditlev/Long/Chartier, and as they completed the 80km/seven laps and headed into transition the leading situation was:

Florian Angert in solo leadMagnus Ditlev and Sam Long in 2nd/3rd (+1:00)Collin Chartier and Sam Laidlow in 4th/5th (+1:10)Daniel Bækkegård in 6th (+2:08)Lionel Sanders, Thor Bendix Madsen , Kristian Hogenhaug in 7th/8th/9th (+2h31) No stopping of the Chartier express

Long absolutely blitzed by T2 with by far the quickest transition among the leaders. He wanted to depose Ditlev immediately and set off in pursuit of Angert.

37th out of the swim, could Yo Yo Yo win the $100,000 prize and the biggest win of his career to date? The heat was on – and Long looked like he was trying to drink everything he saw for the first mile.

With five laps to go, the athletes would soon be very accustomed to the running course of the US Open. It’s mostly flat, but after that quick bike ride and temperatures approaching 100°F, few would want more hills.

Long took the lead shortly before the end of the first lap and at this early stage he looked strong to do so as well.

Two laps later and Long led Ditlev by 16 seconds, with both athletes running at exactly the same pace, separated only by that quick transition from the American athlete. Chartier was also having an exceptional day and had passed Angert in third position, 33 seconds behind Long, with just under 11 km of racing to go.

Further on, the news was not so good for Sanders who was now eighth, having been passed by Aaron Royle and Kristian Hogenhaug. Mika Noodt was closing fast too, which meant that No Limits would need to change things quite abruptly even to maintain a top ten position.

The leading trio – Long, Ditlev, Chartier – almost tied for second, and in the second half of the race there were less than 30 seconds between them. This race was going to go far in the final stages. Pushing so hard, in such difficult conditions, the potential for things to change quickly at any time was always there too.

The start of the fourth lap seemed to serve as a springboard for Chartier who picked up the pace, passed Ditlev to take second place and set off in pursuit of Sam Long. Now coached by Mikal Iden, Norway’s influence was now present, even in the absence of Gustav Iden and Kristian Blummenfelt. It was all heading for a battle of stars and stripes on home turf in Texas. With 5 km to go, they were neck and neck. Fantastic race!

Chartier was on a mission – he pushed and he didn’t look back, and never looked like he was being directed as he drove away, laser focused on the finish line. Long and Ditlev would race to the line for second place, but first place was in his pocket.

Ditlev took silver in the final hundred meters – but the day belonged to Chartier.
